About the Campus Echo
The Campus Echo is the official student newspaper of North Carolina Central University. NCCU, a historically black university (HBCU), is one of the 16 constituent member schools of the University of North Carolina System. It has been targeted as a "growth institution" by UNC. NCCU, with its 8,250 students, is located in the heart of Durham just minutes from the Research Triangle Park, a booming technology and biotechnology center.

If you decide to advertise with the Campus Echo your ad will be seen in one of the nation's very best black college student newspapers. The Campus Echo is one of the most highly recognized HBCU student newspaper in the nation. The print and online editions have won over 150 awards from the Black College Communication Association, the Society for Professional Journalists, and the Associated Collegiate Press. These honors include the national Mark of Excellence Award for Best Online Student Newspaper and numerous general excellence awards from the BCCA and the SPJ. We are eager to serve your advertising needs and to enroll your support of our student newspaper.

 

Who you will reach
Our readers are the 8,500 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in NCCU and the approximately 1,000 full-time faculty and staff of the institution. We distribute to 30 campus locations. Average age of full- and part-time students is 24 years. The majority of students are North Carolinians, but 37 states are represented in the student body. Eighty-three percent of the students are African American; 14 percent are white. Sixty-five percent of the students are female. NCCU is renowned for educating African American professionals and community leaders. The university has programs in biotechnology, education, criminal justice, nursing, health education, law and public administration. Additionally, NCCU is home to the Institute for the Study of Minority Issues and the new Biomedical/Biotechnology Research Institute, a program partnered with the National Institutes of Health and companies like Glaxo Wellcome and Eli Lilly to address the health needs of minority groups.

Online advertising sizes and rates
We provide three size options for online advertisements. Your ad will run in rotation with a maximum of three other ads in the same location. If you do not see you ad, simply hit the refresh button on your  web browser once or twice and it will show up.

  • Box: Runs top right on the page at 300 pixels wide x 250 pixels tall.
  • Tower: Runs on the lower right of the page at 160 pixels wide x 600 pixels tall.
  • Banner: Runs on the lower center of the page at 468 pixels wide x 60 pixels tall.

All online ads must be 100Kb or less. No exceptions.

The very top banner and top right banner ad spaces are reserved for ads placed by the College Media Network, provider of our content management system, College Publisher 5.

Currently we work with static images only. We will design online ads free of charge. If provided by you the ad should be send as a .jpg file and it should be no larger than 50kb.

ONLINE DISPLAY RATES

Box: $150 per month / $450 per semester
Tower: $100 per month / $300 per semester
Banner: $100 per month / $300 per semester

All Campus Echo rates are NET. Any commission earned by an agency or placement service must be ADDED to our stated rate.

Display print rates and contracts

  • Local and national advertisers: $6 per column inch.
  • Bonafide NCCU organizations and non-profits: $4 per column inch.
  • AudioNet Connection: Add $2 per column inch for 20 on-air mentions per ad insertion.
     
    Print color rates: Each spot color = $50. Four color process = $200.

 AudioNet Connection
Add $2 to your per column rate and receive 20 on-air mentions on AudioNet, NCCU's closed circuit student-run radio station. Limit to 30 words.

Contract, frequency, size and prepayment discounts
We subscribe to the Standardized National Advertising Discount Plan.

CONTRACT RATES: If you contract for 101-199 column inches discount = 5%; if you contract for 200-299 column inches discount = 7%; if you contract for 300-399 column inches discount = 10%; if you contract for 500 or more column inches discount = 15%. Contracts must be signed and returned before the rates go into effect.

FREQUENCY DISCOUNTS: 4-8 placements = 10%; more than 8 placements = 15%; SIZE DISCOUNTS: full page discount = 10%; half page discount = 5%;

PREPAYMENT DISCOUNT (must be received before ad insertion date) = 10%
Both frequency and prepayment discounts will be applied to your advertising, but to qualify your prepayment cover all scheduled insertions.

 

Placement:
Desired placement is given when possible. A specific placement location is guaranteed only with a 20 percent additional payment beyond the existing ad rate. Our back page is not available for advertising.

 

How to figure print ad cost
Let's say you place one ad that takes 1/4 page. It will be 3 columns wide and 10 inches tall. The formula is 3 columns x 10 inches x one placement x $6 (our rate) = $180. If agreed to run this this ad 4 times you would discount the total by 10% for the frequency discount. If you agreed to prepay, you would receive another 10% discount. Thus, $180 x 4 placements x .80 (20% of discounts) = $576. For more examples of ad sizes and ad rates see "examples" below.

Campus Echo/AudioNet Connection: Add $2 per column inch for 20 AudioNet on-air mentions. Rate Circulation:
1/4 page ad: 3 column (6 3/8") x 10" tall 3 x 10 x $8 = $240
1/2 page ad (horizontal): 6 column (13") x 10" tall 6 x 10" x $8 = $480

 

Submission and Format
We prefer receiving ads digitally by e-mail in Adobe PDF format. Be sure that fonts are embedded. Insertion orders must be received 10 days before the publication date and creative material must be received seven days before the publication date.

Mechanicals:
The Campus Echo is a photo-offset broadsheet with a standard page size that has a printable area of 11.5" wide X 21" deep (6 columns X 21"). The Campus Echo is in a six column format. Display column widths are as follows:

1 column = 1.812 inch 2 column = 3.750 inch
3 column = 5.687 inch 4 column = 7.625 inch
5 column = 9.562 inch 6 column = 11.5"

 

Insertion/preprint rates
Single sheet (no folds), single advertiser = $75 per 1,000; Up to 4 pages = $100; 5 - 8 pages $125; 9 - 12 pages $150.

Insertion instructions: Our minimum and maximum insertion order is 4,000. You must contact the Campus Echo before shipping. Inserts must be scheduled 7 business days before the publication date and a copy must be submitted to the Campus Echo for approval. Do not ship until approval is granted. Brick stack and wrap or band the entire shipment. Do not band individual bundles.

Insertion specifications: Minimum size = 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"; maximum size = 11" x 14"; print stock minimum weight = 50 lb.; maximum thickness = 1/4". Must be suitable for insertion into the paper: no accordion fold pieces or oddly shaped pieces without one straight edge.

Print and online classified advertising
ONLINE CLASSIFIED ONLY: $10 for two weeks; $20 per month; $60 per semester; $100 per year. Maximum 50 words.

OUR SPECIAL CLASSIFIED BOX AND ONLINE OFFER: 1 column wide (1.812" wide) by 2" tall with box and bold headline: $10 per issue. Words will be sized to fit, but there is a 30 word maximum. No charge for reverse type. Same but two column wide by 2" tall: $20. Same but three column wide by 2" tall: $30.

Each classified print insertion earns a two week online placement. If a classified is placed for the entire semester in the print edition it will run the entire semester on the online edition.

CLASSIFIED DISCOUNTS: Subtract 10% from your total bill if you run your ad for the entire semester (6 issues) and 20% if you run your ad the entire year.

PAYMENT:All classifieds must be prepaid by check, VISA or MC. Deadline is the Friday before the Thursday issue date.

REFUNDS: We are unable to give refunds, but will apply cancelled advertising to future.
