This Friday, former N.C. Central University political science professor, Melissa Harris-Lacewell, will deliver a speech on "African-American Civic Engagement Post Obama."
After teaching at NCCU from 1996-1997, Harris-Lacewell has gone on to become an associate professor of Politics and African American studies at Princeton University. She has been featured on "The Rachel Maddow Show" and "Countdown with Keith Obermann" for her expertise on racial and gender issues and the U.S. elections.
A native of Virginia, Harris-Lacewell received her B.A. in English from Wake Forest University and her Ph.D in political science from Duke University. Her book, "Barbershops, Bibles, and BET: Everyday Talk and Black Political Thought," has won her the 2005 W.E.B. Du Bois book award and the 2005 Best Book award from the American Political Science Association.
The book explores the development of political ideas among African Americans in everyday places such as the church and the barbershop.
Her speech on Friday will focus on the response to the challenges that African Americans face in a post-Obama election.
"I am really excited about hearing her speak," said Ivorie Sangutei, English education senior. "We can learn a lot from someone who is so widely respected."
Come hear Harris-Lawell speak in the H.M. Michaux, Jr. School of Education Auditorium at 11 a.m. this Friday.
