Abortion, gay marriage and the Occupy Wall Street Protesters are all controversial issues that have one common denominator, they are first Amendment Rights. On iSpeak, a blog radio show conducted by N.C. Central University Law students, they tackle all of these issues and more.
iSpeak, is a blog radio show founded on the grounds of the law class, Constitutional Law: first Amendment, taught by associate professor Brenda Reddix-Smalls of the N.C. Central University department of law.
Created in the fall of 2010, the show allows callers to call in and express their opinions on the different subjects of first Amendment Rights with the students of her class.
"We are thankful to Dean Raymond C. Pierce for innovative projects like this that enhance the experience of the students, as well as further the mission of the NCCU School of Law and its commitment to addressing issues of social justice," said third-year law student Jerry Boies.
The blog radio show is also a way for the law students to gain practice for the real world. Reddix-Smalls talked about the reasons why the iSpeak show was created. "Part of training lawyers is training a lawyer who can handle the new technology as well as the doctrinal issues facing lawyers in the community," Reddix-Smalls said. "This iSpeak blog radio is a way to have the law students learn a new technology as well as to have the community to explore these issues of free speech."
According to Boies, iSpeak is another way for lawyers to connect with their audience.
"iSpeak radio blog is an effective way to reach and educate the community," Boies said. "Sometimes, being a lawyer is about giving a voice to people who would not otherwise have a voice and iSpeak Radio magnifies how a lawyer may be able to give a voice to his listeners."
Dr. Reddix-Smalls has high expectations for iSpeak radio and Boies is certainly thankful for the opportunity.
"We hope that it grows so large that we will have to move to a television show and that it will be a place where everyone is clamoring to get not only on it as host but to call in and express their view point," Dr. Reddix-Smalls said.
iSpeak radio blog is aired every Wednesday at 1pm on the website www.blogtalkradio.com/ispeak. The next show is called "Can You Hear Me Now? California Silencing Protester by Silencing Cell Phones." To get in on the discussion with Dr. Reddix-Smalls and her class call 310-807-5123 when the show is airing.
