As a student at N.C. Central University, I have come to realization that some factors make a college a really good one, however one thing a college can do without is adding more stresses to students lives.
Freshmen start at the university college and really don't have to stress or worry about anything. The classes are picked for you and all you have to do is show up. Life is easy while you're getting used to being in college. You go to make your schedule, talk to your advisor and leave, things are just that simple.
Sophomore year brings more responsibility and more stress to your life. Now, I don't know if any of you has ever had experience, but this was one crazy experience to me.
The university college is designed to help students go forth into their major and life in general. Well, as many may know when you approach your junior year you have to transition out of the university college and into your major departments with a new advisor that can better serve you with what you are concentrating on with the major chosen.
But before you can transition out of the university college, you have to complete many tasks and tests.
The first test is the CAPP test, also known as the ACT in my opinion. I don't know when I signed up to take another ACT, but in order to not have a hold on my account I had to take this "CAPP" test.
The second test is the vocabulary test. The vocabulary test consists of 100 questions that have to do with the university, math and science.
Really, if I wanted to take another final I would have let someone know a long time ago. I felt as though it was a waste of my time and effort.
It took away from my real studies, what was this helping me with at the end of the day? It didn't help me get my five page English paper that was due or the math homework I had to do; it took time away from me doing those more important things.
After you have completed the first two tests, you must give a 5 to 7 minute speech in front of your advisor and it will be videotaped. They send an email telling you when you can sign up and take it, you also have a dress code. It's like what are you getting out of this?
Are you sending this to jobs to help me get one or is this going to sit in the university college and not help me with anything?
Honestly, again it's a waste of time and effort. Isn't it required that you take an Elements of Speech class or a public speaking class? So why am I doing this again?
All in all I just feel this entire thing is pointless. I understand that the university is going through some changes and wants to be more like an upscale university, but at the same time the university needs to understand that the students make your college not the faculty and staff.
Without students you have no university. Listen to what your students are saying, listen to what their needs are because at this point in time I really don't feel that the university is doing this well.
What is all this going to do for anyone when they are in the real world or when they are in their major courses like most are right now?
What bothers me the most about all this is the fact that the university college has the nerve to tell the students a hold will be put on their account if they do not complete these tasks that they have set for us to do, so you're telling me that you want more money?
