Faculty Senate to request chancellor candidate names

Faculty Senate wants names to be made public before selection

They want the names. And they want them now.

The N.C. Central University Faculty Senate decided in their meeting today to request the names of the final three candidates for chancellor at NCCU.

Neither the NCCU Chancellor Search Committee, nor University of North Carolina President Thomas Ross have disclosed the names to the public.

Ross received the names of the search committee's top three candidates late last month, and is expected to make his selection soon, possibly at the Feb. 8 UNC Board of Governors' meeting.

Sandra Rogers, chair of the Faculty Senate and a member of the search committee, will write a letter to the NCCU Board of Trustees and Harold Epps, chair of the search committee, requesting that the names be released prior to Ross' selection.

Alade Tokuta, NCCU science and technology chair, asked Rogers to reveal the names during the meeting. He also wanted to know if it was a policy that candidate names not be revealed.

Rogers said she was bound by a confidentiality agreement and could not reveal the names.

Bernice Duffy Johnson, NCCU associate vice provost and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, said that historically candidate names are released by this time.

"In the past it has been usual when it gets to this particular stage that the names are released publicly," Duffy Johnson said. "But this particular search committee, and I think also, the director for President Ross are saying not to release that until after President Ross has made the decision."

Tokuta said at this late stage the names should be made available to the public.

"It's common practice. We need to know who these people are," Tokuta said. "What is the secrecy at this point? So, please convey that to the chair of the committee. These names have to be released."

Rogers said 13 faculty members were invited to have lunch with the candidates.

"Well that's 13 of 278," Tokuta shot back.

A faculty member expressed confusion about whether or not the secrecy was a policy or not.

Duffy Johnson clarified what she had said earlier.

"This particular search committee, in consultation with President Ross, made the decision not to do that kind of [name] release," she said.

Later, Tokuta said Ross could not get away with keeping the names secret if he tried to do so at UNC-Chapel Hill.

"We're not taking charge of our own," Takuta said. "I don't think anybody should sit passively and say it's okay. It's not his [Ross's] chancellor. It's our chancellor."

Tokuta said NCCU had a dictator previously, and a dictator is what will happen if nobody says anything at this point in the process.

The motion to make the formal request for release of the names came at the end of the meeting. The motion passed with one faculty member opposed.

In October, the Faculty Senate requested additional representation on the search committee. The Board of Trustees denied that request.

The former chancellor at NCCU, Charlie Nelms, retired suddenly last July. Currently, Charles Becton is interim chancellor.
