Since receiving word that construction could begin on June 17, 2010, a construction team from Balfour Beatty  has been moving at a blinding pace.

The construction of N.C. Central University's new School of Nursing has the team working daily at laying bricks, paving new parking lots, and installing elevators.

Construction is scheduled to conclude Oct. 11 on a three-story building that will contain two lecture halls, one auditorium, two elevators, and cherry wood walls and ceiling arrangements.

Recently I toured the building, which is contracted with a GMP, or guaranteed maximum price, of around $16 million.

During the tour I was able to view all three floors, the Dean's new office, and even the massive air conditioning system, which takes up an entire floor.

I was impressed with what is to be called "the History Wall" made of cherry wood, which will grace the building's lobby.

I was even more impressed to hear about the new amphitheater to be constructed between the building and the new parking lot. It will seat 220.

Upon leaving the tour it was brought to my attention that the bricks that make up the exterior of the building were laid in extraordinary pattern designed to resemble an African quilt. Cool idea .
