After a disappointing start to the season in the debut of new head coach Henry Frazier, the N.C.Central University Eagles (1-1) bounced back in a 42-3 rout over the Central State University Marauders , in the prestigious Cleveland Classic on Sept. 10. The game was played at Cleveland Browns Stadium, home to the NFL's Cleveland Browns.
Red-shirt junior wide receiver Geovonie Irvine led the offense with 7 receptions for 86 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Eagles not only struck first, but second, third, fourth and fifth, to jump out to a 35-0 lead.
The Marauders finally got on the scoreboard After a 25-yard field goal by Gracew Mahbena which made the score 35-3, at the half.
In the third and fourth quarter the Eagles' defense continued to put on a show, shutting out the Marauders for the rest of the game and capitalizing off of the inexperience of Central State's young quarterbacks. Four-year starting quarterback Jeffrey Brooks was sidelined with an ankle injury.
Junior Arthur Goforth led the team in with 145 all-purpose, while senior Brandon Outlaw led the defense for the second straight game with 5 tackles and 1 tack loss.
Andre Clarke anchored the Eagles running game, with a bruising 144 yards. The Eagles finished with a total of 216 rushing yards. Red-shirt Quarterback, Michael Johnson added 4 touchdowns through the air.
Irvine recorded his 100th reception as an eagle and finished and caught three more passes, bringing his career total to 103. He is the 13th receiver in NCCU history to have 100 career total receptions.
The Eagles will face the Phoenix of Elon University Saturday Sept 17. This will mark the first time in 15 years that the schools separated by 43 miles will square off.
