The excitement of their first conference win on Saturday against Savannah State was short-lived for the Lady Eagles of N.C. Central University. On Monday, Feb. 13 the Lady Eagles were pounded by the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State 78-52. The Lady Eagles looked flustered, drained, and uncomfortable from tip-off.
"They're dealing with a lot right now, not just the physical play, the emotional play as well, when you lose a teammate to certain circumstances it kind of throws you off also because they know what's going on with her," NCCU head coach Joli Robinson said.
The Lady Eagles were without their starting point guard and leading scorer senior Blaire Houston due to an undisclosed reason and it was a big difference. The Lady Bulldogs stifling full-court press forced 20 first half turnovers, making it hard for the Eagles to even get past half court. A 15-0 run by the Bulldogs made the score 25-6 with 12 minutes left in the 1st half, and the Lady Bulldogs never looked back.
Four players scored in double figures for the Bulldogs, and Paris Alston led the way with a double-double, 19 points and 13 rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs shot 38 percent as a team from the field, and 39 percent from long distance.
Redshirt Junior Chasidy Williams didn't start tonight due to team violation but stepped up in the absence of team leader Blaire Houston. "Everybody has to do their part whether we win or lose all game," Robinson said of the violation.
Williams was very aggressive scoring nearly half of the Lady Eagles points and recording her seventh double-double of the season with 23 points and 13 rebounds on 8 of 15 shooting. She was 7 for 11 from the free throw line.
"This game was much better than last game for me, I was more aggressive, and crashed the boards more," Chasidy Williams said.
Freshman guard Kabrina Truesdale also chipped in with 7 points and 6 assists.
As a team the Lady Eagles finished with a 35.1 percentage from the field, and 21.4 percent from long distance. "Our first half wasn't good at all but we came out 2nd half stronger, we just couldn't pull it out because of our 1st half performance," Williams said.
NCCU falls to 3-22 on the season, with a 1-11 conference record. On Saturday Feb. 18 the Lady Eagles will travel to Greensboro to take on rival North Carolina A&T in a 2 pm contest and try to even the season series. " If we come out like we did in the 2nd half, we'll probably do better, and win," Williams said.
