First Person Shooters — FPS — are loved by gamers worldwide. Each year new versions are released, offering gamers a fresh, original experience. However, when new installments of popular games are announced, fan buzz, media hype and publisher warfare surrounding which is superior becomes the rage.
A war that has raged for months will come to a head when Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 parachute onto store shelves, bringing the war home to eager gamers.
BF3 will be released Oct. 25 and COD debuts Nov. 8. Both titles have huge fan bases and a lot to prove. COD has dominated the throne for a number of years and is trying to reign supreme. MW3 is a cinematic-styled series that ended with a cliff hanger in a previous installment, leaving gamers wondering what could be next. In COD, U.S. Army Rangers and Task Force 141 reunite in the hunt for ultra-nationalist Vladimir Makarov.
A worldwide campaign follows the destruction of major U.S. cities caused by Lieutenant General Shepherd, a traitor to the United States who helped Makarov fulfill his goals. Right on COD's heels, BF3 is kicking in the door, looking to usurp the throne.
BF3 has a smaller-scale blockbuster story. Set in the middle of a rescue mission during an invasion of Iran, BF3 aims to provide a fresh experience in their single-player arsenal while still holding strong in their multiplayer modes.
A new "Deathmatch" mode is an experience gamers welcome. COD is not taking BF3's additions lightly.
Multiplayer modes have been updated in COD. New ways to use points earned during online play allow gamers to obtain reward packages, providing them with new and old fan favorites to dominate the battlefield.
A zombie survival mode is available as well, letting fans mow down zombie hoards at will. So who is No. 1? That remains to be determined.
However, speculation as to which one is the best will continue until both games are released for $60 on PS3, XBOX 360 and PC. Until then, the war will rage.
