During 10:40 break today around 40 students gathered outside the Hoey Administration Building to protest the expulsion of N.C. Central University student Roddrick Howell.
The students organized the protest through twitter following the Campus Echo article "On the outside Looking In," of Oct. 5.
Howell, know on campus LaFlare, was suspended following an incident in the James E. Shepard Library, Aug. 18. He was later diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder. In a subsequent hearing Howell was expelled for one year.
Protesters shouted, "Re-admit Rod," and held signs that declared administration proceedings were "Not Fair."
Protesting students expressed concern over lack of due process granted in Howell's hearing.
"School was supporting Rod, his job and housing. He lost everything over a disability," said NCCU senior Desiree Wright, a personal friend to Howell, "This is unjust, not giving correct procedure. You can't prosecute someone for having a mental episode."
"The administration overlooks the best interest of the students. Students need to be treated fairly," said NCCU senior Nigel Hood.
Maya Brown, the NCCU student who was grabbed by Howell in the Shepard Library was present at the protest.
"I feel like I'm being ganged up on," said Brown. "I want people to understand my side of the story… There are consequences for everything somebody does."
Brown said she would like to see an apology from Howell, something she felt he had ample opportunity to do in the original article, but did not.
