N.C. Central University students cast their votes in the midterm elections from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Alfonso Elder Student Union.
Two students, who said they worked tirelessly to get out the vote at NCCU, said they were disappointed by last night's outcome. Both said they were proud of their efforts to get out the vote.
"I think we did an awesome job. Getting people out to vote on campus," said Jamal Troublefield, second vice president of the NCCU branch of the NAACP.
"We just have to work harder in two years," said the social work and political science sophomore.
History senior Martha Butler, with the NCCU Coordinating Committee for Democratic Elections, said she was disappointed with student turnout.
"More people should have been involved. I saw students today who were still asking me where they could register to vote. It disturbs me," she said.
Numerous campus organizations helped to mobilize the NCCU student vote through several events and activities. The Student Government Association, the Civic Engagement Task Force, the campus chapter of the NAACP and the Student African-American Brotherhood among others hosted events such as transportation to the polls, a voter rally, a Watch Party and an Election Day Sleep-in at the Alfonso Elder Student Union.
In a message to the NCCU campus, Chancellor Charlie Nelms expressed his gratitude to the students.
"The number of students who voted at the on-campus precinct was 663 and many more took advantage during early voting. When we look at comparable midterm elections, this was the biggest on-campus turnout since 1990," wrote the Chancellor.
"Voting matters," wrote Nelms.
